How Far Through the Year Are We?

Year progress = (day of year Γ· days in year) Γ— 100. So 1 March of a non-leap year is day 60, year is 365 days, progress = 16.4%. 1 July is day 182, 50% (technically 49.9%). 1 October is day 274, 75%. 1 December is day 335, 91.8%. Halfway through the year always falls around 2 July (day 183 of 365).

Why track? Goal-setting, habits, time perception. Many people are surprised at how fast a year passes - tracking progress in percent reveals it. Useful for end-of-year planning ('only 8% of the year left' from late November). Also useful as a writing prompt (essays about year-end reflection at 90%, mid-year check-ins at 50%).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the year halfway in early July?

365 Γ· 2 = 182.5, so day 183 is exactly halfway. That's 2 July in a non-leap year, 1 July in leap years (since the year is 366 days). Most people assume mid-year is mid-July, but it's earlier - which is also why summer break in many cultures peaks late June through early July.

What's the formula for any date?

Day of year Γ· 365 Γ— 100% (or Γ· 366 for leap years). Day of year = (sum of days in completed months) + day of month. So 15 March in non-leap year: 31 (Jan) + 28 (Feb) + 15 = 74. 74 Γ· 365 = 20.3%.
