England and Wales: New Year's Day (1 Jan), Good Friday, Easter Monday, Early May Bank Holiday (1st Mon May), Spring Bank Holiday (last Mon May), Summer Bank Holiday (last Mon Aug), Christmas Day (25 Dec), Boxing Day (26 Dec). Scotland: replaces Easter Monday with 2 January, has different Summer Bank Holiday (1st Mon Aug). Northern Ireland: extras for St Patrick's Day (17 Mar) and Battle of the Boyne (12 Jul).
If a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a 'substitute day' is observed on the following Monday (or sometimes Tuesday if Boxing Day moves). Banks, public services, and most shops close. Pubs may operate with restricted hours. Post Office closed. Schools usually align with bank holidays for term-time scheduling.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are bank holidays paid time off?
Not automatically. Employees only get bank holidays as paid leave if their contract says so or if it's part of their statutory leave entitlement (5.6 weeks/year minimum). Most full-time UK employees do get bank holidays as paid days off, but it's not legally required.
Does Scotland have different bank holidays?
Yes. Scotland has 2 January as a bank holiday (in addition to 1 January) but does not observe Easter Monday. Scotland also has a different Summer Bank Holiday date (1st Monday of August vs last Monday in England). Northern Ireland has additional holidays for St Patrick's Day and 12 July.
