How to Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

Subtract 32 from Fahrenheit, then multiply by 5/9 (or 0.5556). Formula: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9. So 86 °F: (86-32) × 5/9 = 54 × 5/9 = 30 °C. The 32 offset accounts for the different zero points (Fahrenheit's 32 °F = water freezing).

Useful for converting American weather forecasts and recipes to Celsius. 70 °F (typical room temperature in US) = 21 °C. 100 °F (hot summer day) = 38 °C. 350 °F oven (American baking standard) = 177 °C, often expressed as 180 °C in metric recipes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick mental method?

Subtract 32, divide by 2, add 10%. So 86 °F: 86-32=54, ÷2=27, +10%=29.7 °C (close to exact 30 °C). The '÷2 plus 10%' approximates the 5/9 multiplier. Within 1 °C for most everyday temperatures.

Why is body temperature 98.6 °F not a round number?

Original 1851 measurement gave 37 °C (round in Celsius). Converting 37 °C to Fahrenheit gives 98.6 - the precision is from the metric original, not the Fahrenheit. Modern research suggests average body temperature is closer to 36.6 °C (97.9 °F), with significant variation between individuals.
