How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

Multiply Celsius by 9/5 (or 1.8) and add 32. Formula: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32. So 25 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 77 °F. The two scales meet at -40 (it's the same in both), and 0 °C (water freezing) corresponds to 32 °F.

Most useful for following American recipes (oven temperatures), interpreting US weather forecasts, or describing UK temperatures to American audiences. Comfortable indoor temperature of 20 °C = 68 °F. Hot summer day at 30 °C = 86 °F. Bread baking 200 °C = 392 °F.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick mental method?

Double the Celsius value, subtract 10%, add 32. So 20 °C: 20×2 = 40, -4 = 36, +32 = 68 °F. Accurate to within 1 °F for most temperatures. The exact formula is ×1.8+32; the '×2 minus 10%' shortcut approximates the 1.8 factor.

Why does the US use Fahrenheit?

Historical inertia. Fahrenheit was the dominant English-speaking scientific scale from 1724 until the late 1800s. Most countries shifted to Celsius (formally adopted by the General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1948) but the US has not formally switched to metric/Celsius.
