Age conversion note:
The formula used: first year = 15 human years, second = 9, then varies by size. This is more accurate than the old "7 dog years" rule.
How Dog Years Actually Work
The old '1 dog year = 7 human years' is too simple. Modern research (UCSD 2019 study) suggests a logarithmic relationship: human age = 16 Γ ln(dog age) + 31. So: 1-year-old dog β 31 human years. 2-year-old β 42. 5-year-old β 57. 10-year-old β 67. 15-year-old β 75. The first 1-2 years are equivalent to 30+ human years (rapid maturation), then aging slows.
Dog age also depends on size. Small breeds live longer than large: Chihuahua average 14-16 years, Great Dane 7-10 years. So a 7-year-old Great Dane is genuinely 'old' (equivalent ~70 human years), while a 7-year-old Chihuahua is middle-aged. Adjust the calculation by breed size: small dogs aged slower past year 2; large dogs faster.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does breed matter?
Larger breeds age faster physiologically. The reasons aren't fully understood but appear linked to size-related biological stress. Large breeds also typically die younger from cancers and joint issues. Small breeds (Chihuahuas, terriers) regularly live 14-16 years; large breeds (Great Danes, Mastiffs) often die at 7-10.
When is a dog 'old'?
Senior phase typically starts around 7-10 years, depending on breed. Veterinary 'senior' care recommendations kick in around year 7 for large breeds, year 9-10 for small. Older dogs benefit from twice-yearly checkups, blood panels, joint supplements. Cognitive dysfunction (canine dementia) common past age 10-12.
