Sun sign astrology is the simplest form. Your sun sign is determined by your birth date alone (Aries: 21 March to 19 April, Taurus: 20 April to 20 May, and so on). The zodiac is a Babylonian invention from around 600 BCE, dividing the ecliptic (the sun's apparent yearly path) into twelve 30-degree segments named after constellations the sun passes through. The signs were standardised by Greek astronomers (notably Ptolemy in the 2nd century CE) and became the Western tradition we still use. The constellations have actually drifted since then due to the precession of the equinoxes; today's astrological Aries doesn't match the constellation Aries in the sky.

The 12 signs are grouped into four elements (fire, earth, air, water) and three modes (cardinal, fixed, mutable), giving every sign a distinct personality archetype. Aries is cardinal fire (initiator, action). Taurus is fixed earth (steady, sensual). Gemini is mutable air (adaptable, communicative). The pattern repeats through the year. Even people who do not believe in astrology often recognise their sun-sign archetype, which is the system's most consistent finding.

The horoscope is best read as a daily prompt to reflect on a topic, not as a forecast. 'Today is good for clear conversations' nudges you to have one. 'Watch your spending' nudges you to check your bank balance. The same generic advice would work for anyone, on any day, but the framing of 'because you are a Capricorn, today...' makes you more likely to act on it. That mechanism is well-studied (the Forer effect) and explains why horoscopes feel personal even when the text is broad.

Studies have found no evidence that sun signs predict personality, career outcomes or relationship compatibility above chance. The Carlson 1985 double-blind study, published in Nature, asked astrologers to match birth charts to personality profiles and they performed at chance level.
