When is Labor Day?
First Monday in September (US). Federal holiday honouring American workers. 2025: 1 September. 2026: 7 September. 2027: 6 September. Established as a federal holiday in 1894 after the Pullman strike. Traditionally marks the unofficial end of US summer - school resumes the week after, beaches close down, and white shoes/clothes go away (per the old fashion rule).
Different from May Day / International Workers' Day (1 May) used in most of the rest of the world. The September date was deliberately chosen by US labour movement leaders to distance from the Communist-associated May Day. Common observances: parades, BBQs, family gatherings, retail sales (smaller than Memorial Day but still significant). UK has no Labor Day - Bank Holiday Monday is the closest equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is US Labor Day in September not May?
Political distancing from May Day's socialist/communist associations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. American labour leaders (Samuel Gompers, AFL) chose September to celebrate American workers without linking to international socialism. The September date stuck.
Is Labor Day a UK holiday?
No - the UK has Bank Holidays. The closest equivalents: May Day Bank Holiday (first Monday in May) and Late May Bank Holiday (last Monday in May). Both are workers' rights holidays in spirit but use different dates and traditions.
