How to Convert TB to GB

1 TB = 1,024 GB (binary) or 1,000 GB (decimal). Multiply TB by 1,024 (or 1,000). So 5 TB = 5,120 GB binary, or 5,000 GB decimal. The binary value is what your OS reports; the decimal is what the manufacturer puts on the box.

Useful when purchasing storage and planning capacity. A 2 TB drive marketed by capacity = 2,000 GB decimal = 1,863 GB binary as your OS will show it. The 137 GB difference is real - your OS files don't see capacity that the manufacturer labelled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a TB drive or multiple GB drives?

TB drives almost always cheaper per GB at consumer level. A 4 TB drive often costs less than 4Γ— a 1 TB drive. Multiple smaller drives offer redundancy through RAID setups - 2Γ— 4 TB drives in RAID 1 give 4 TB usable plus mirroring.

What's a petabyte?

1 PB = 1,024 TB (binary) or 1,000 TB (decimal). Mostly relevant in enterprise/data-center contexts. Personal storage rarely reaches PB scale. Massive media archives (video production studios, scientific research) can be in PB.
