Note that the PNG file will almost always be larger than the original JPG. This is normal. PNG uses lossless compression which preserves every pixel exactly, while JPG uses lossy compression which achieves smaller sizes by discarding some detail. You are not losing quality by converting, you are preserving the quality that already exists in the JPG.

Convert to PNG when you need to edit the image further without accumulating compression artefacts. Each time a JPG is saved, it is re-compressed and loses a tiny amount of detail. Converting to PNG first, editing, and then saving as PNG avoids this quality degradation.
