iPhone photos in HEIC/HEIF format

What Is HEIC and Why Do iPhones Use It?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 or later. Apple adopted it because HEIC files are roughly 50% smaller than JPG files at the same visual quality, saving significant storage space on your device.

The format uses the HEVC (H.265) compression standard, which is more advanced than the JPEG compression algorithm from 1992. This means sharper photos in smaller files. However, HEIC is not widely supported outside the Apple ecosystem, which is why converting to JPG is often necessary for sharing, printing, or editing.

Choosing a Quality Setting

The default quality of 92% produces JPG files that are visually indistinguishable from the HEIC original for virtually all uses. This is the best setting for sharing photos, uploading to social media, or printing.

If file size is critical (for example, emailing many photos or uploading to a size-restricted platform), 80-85% produces significantly smaller files with only minor quality loss visible at full zoom. Below 70%, compression artefacts become noticeable in areas with gradients like skies. For professional or archival use, 95-100% preserves maximum detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I not open HEIC files on my Windows PC?

Windows does not include HEIC support by default. You can install the HEIC Image Extension from the Microsoft Store, but many applications still cannot open the files. Converting to JPG gives you a file that works in every Windows application, from Paint to Photoshop, without installing anything.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

There is a small quality reduction because JPG uses older compression. At 90-95% quality, the difference is invisible in normal viewing. HEIC files store slightly more colour information (10-bit vs 8-bit), so very subtle gradients may show minor banding after conversion, but this is rarely noticeable in everyday photos.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser. Your photos never leave your device. This makes it safe to convert personal or sensitive images without privacy concerns.
