Fuel Consumption Units
- L/100km: Litres per 100 kilometres (Europe, Australia)
- km/L: Kilometres per litre (metric, inverted)
- MPG-UK: Miles per gallon (imperial gallon, 4.546 litres)
- MPG-US: Miles per gallon (US gallon, 3.785 litres)
- Lower L/100km is better. Higher km/L and MPG is better.
Fuel Consumption Units
Two main systems: distance per fuel (mpg, km/L - higher = more efficient) or fuel per distance (L/100km, gallons per 100 mi - lower = more efficient). Different countries default differently: US = mpg, UK = mpg, EU = L/100km, Australia = L/100km. UK MPG and US MPG differ because gallons differ by 20% in size.
Reference: small efficient car = 50 UK mpg = 41 US mpg = 5.65 L/100km. Average modern car = 35-40 UK mpg = 6-7 L/100km. SUV/truck = 25-30 UK mpg = 9.4-11.3 L/100km. Hybrid car = 60-70 UK mpg = 4-4.7 L/100km. EV equivalent (MPGe) = 90-130 UK mpge = 2-3 L/100km equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are UK and US MPG different?
UK gallon = 4.546 L; US gallon = 3.785 L. So UK MPG numbers are about 20% higher than US MPG for the same vehicle. Always check which system is being quoted - confused readers can think US cars are less efficient than they actually are.
Is L/100km easier than MPG?
Some find it more intuitive - the smaller the number, the more efficient. Comparing options: 5 L/100km vs 8 L/100km is clearly 'better' (less fuel). MPG comparison can be misleading - going from 15 mpg to 25 mpg saves more fuel than going from 30 mpg to 40 mpg over the same distance.
