Favicons are the small icons that appear in browser tabs, bookmarks, home screens, and search results next to your website name. They help users identify your site quickly among many open tabs and bookmark entries. A missing favicon makes your site look unfinished.

Place the favicon files in your website's root directory or a dedicated icons folder. Add link tags to the head section of your HTML. The essential tags are: a link with rel 'icon' pointing to your favicon.ico, a link with rel 'apple-touch-icon' pointing to the 180x180 PNG, and optionally a web app manifest linking the 192x192 and 512x512 sizes.

Most modern browsers look for favicon.ico in the root directory automatically, even without a link tag. However, adding explicit link tags ensures all browsers and platforms find the correct icon and size. The Apple Touch Icon is particularly important for iOS users who save your site to their home screen.

Keep it simple. Favicons display at tiny sizes (16x16 pixels), so fine detail is lost. Use bold shapes, simple icons, or a single letter from your brand name. High contrast between the icon and background helps visibility. Avoid photographs or complex illustrations.

If your logo does not work at small sizes, create a simplified version. Many brands use just their initial letter or a simplified icon mark as their favicon. Test your favicon against both light and dark browser themes to make sure it is visible in both.
