What's a Gradian?

A gradian (also gon, grad, or grade) is a unit of angle: 100 gradians = 90Β° (right angle). So a full circle = 400 gradians. The decimal-friendly system was proposed during the French Revolution alongside other metric units. Less common than degrees today, used mostly in surveying and some European military contexts.

Multiply degrees by 10/9 (or 1.111...) to get gradians. So 90Β° Γ— 10/9 = 100 gradians. 45Β° Γ— 10/9 = 50 gradians. The decimal alignment makes some calculations cleaner - a quarter circle is exactly 100, not 90 with awkward fractions.
