Tips
Oats are very light — a cup of oats weighs far less than a cup of flour. Don't pack them down.
Cup measurements can vary by up to 20% depending on how you fill the cup. For consistent baking results, weighing ingredients in grams is always more accurate.
How Much Does a Cup of Oats Weigh?
1 US cup of rolled oats (old-fashioned) = 80-90 grams. Quick oats: 80 g. Steel-cut oats: 175 g (denser, finer cut). Instant oats: 75 g. The variation comes from oat processing - rolled oats are flattened and lighter; steel-cut are dense whole groats. Most baking and porridge recipes assume rolled oats unless specified.
For breakfast porridge, 40-50 g oats per person is typical. So a US cup of rolled oats = roughly 2 servings. Bircher muesli and overnight oats: 30-40 g per portion. Granola recipes often call for 3-4 cups oats = 240-360 g, producing about 6-8 cups of finished granola.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do steel-cut oats weigh more?
Steel-cut oats are whole groats chopped into pieces - they pack more densely than the flattened, hollow rolled oats. So 1 cup of steel-cut weighs about 2x as much as 1 cup of rolled. Cooking time differs too - steel-cut takes 20-30 minutes vs 5 minutes for rolled.
Can I substitute one for another?
By weight, mostly yes. By volume, no. Rolled oats and quick oats are interchangeable in most recipes (quick oats absorb liquid faster). Steel-cut requires significantly different cooking time and water ratio - not a simple swap.
