Concrete Tips
- • Standard concrete thickness: 100mm for paths, 150mm for driveways
- • Always add 10% extra for spillage and waste
- • Mix ratios: General (1:2:3), Strong (1:1.5:3), Lightweight (1:4:4)
- • Let concrete cure for at least 7 days before use
- • Premix bags are convenient for small projects; ready-mix trucks for large areas
Volume in Cubic Metres, Then Bags
Concrete works the same way as any other volume calculation: length by width by depth in metres gives cubic metres. A 3 m by 2 m slab at 100 mm deep is 0.6 cubic metres. Where it gets fiddly is the bag arithmetic. A standard 20 kg premix bag yields roughly 0.009 cubic metres of mixed concrete, so that 0.6 cubic metre slab needs 67 bags. At £3.50 a bag in 2026, that is £234 in mix alone, before delivery.
Above about 0.5 cubic metres it is almost always cheaper to buy ready-mix from a local depot. They charge by the cubic metre (typically £100 to £130 in the UK), deliver in a wagon or mini-mix barrow, and the quality is more consistent than mixing 60 bags by hand in a wheelbarrow. The calculator shows both the bag total and the DIY cement-sand-gravel breakdown so you can compare.
Mix Ratios for Different Jobs
A 1:2:3 mix (one part cement, two sand, three aggregate) is the workhorse for slabs, paths and footings. For post holes, a 1:2:4 mix or even straight Postcrete (a fast-set blend you pour dry, then add water) is fine because the load is compressive. A bag of cement weighs 25 kg in the UK and yields roughly 0.025 cubic metres at standard ratios, so the cement count is the volume divided by 0.025 then rounded up.
Always order an extra 5 to 10% on top of the calculated volume. Concrete is unforgiving: if you run short halfway through a pour you cannot really pause and order more, because the original mix sets and the new pour will not bond cleanly. For the aggregate side, [Gravel Calculator](/gravel-calculator) handles the volume to tonnes conversion.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many 20 kg bags of concrete do I need for 1 cubic metre?
Roughly 110 bags. Each 20 kg bag yields about 0.009 cubic metres of mixed concrete. At £3.50 a bag, that is £385 in mix alone. For anything over 0.5 cubic metres, ready-mix delivery from a local depot is cheaper and more consistent.
What mix ratio should I use for a garden slab?
1:2:3 (cement:sand:aggregate) by volume is the standard for general garden slabs. For driveways or anything taking heavier load, step up to 1:1.5:3. For post holes and fence posts, 1:2:4 or Postcrete works fine because the load is purely compressive.
How thick should a concrete slab be?
75 mm for a garden shed base, 100 mm for a patio, 150 mm for a driveway carrying a car. Anything carrying a vehicle needs reinforcement (steel mesh or rebar) bedded mid-depth. A 100 mm slab without mesh will crack within a few seasons under repeated frost cycles.
How long before I can walk on concrete?
Light foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours. Full cure (when concrete reaches design strength) takes 28 days, though it is usable for vehicles after 7. Cover the slab with hessian or polythene for the first few days to slow evaporation and prevent surface cracking.
