❄️ Winter Tire Facts

Tread Depth: Winter tires should have minimum 6/32 inch tread depth

Temperature: Use winter tires when temperatures drop below 7Β°C (45Β°F) consistently

Performance: Winter tires provide 25-40% better traction than all-season tires in snow

All-Season: Not the same as winter tires - don't provide same winter performance

Storage: Properly store off-season tires in cool, dry place away from direct sunlight

πŸ”§ Tire Changeover Tips

  • β€’ Change tires before first snow
  • β€’ Have tires balanced and rotated
  • β€’ Check tire pressure (pressure drops in cold)
  • β€’ Inspect for damage or wear
  • β€’ Keep receipt for reimbursement if required
  • β€’ Store all-season tires properly
  • β€’ Plan changeover 1-2 weeks before season
  • β€’ Budget $400-1000 per set of tires

Provinces with Winter Tyre Laws

Quebec is the only province that mandates winter tyres for all passenger vehicles. Required from 1 December to 15 March (was 15 December to 15 March before 2019). Vehicles without winter tyres face fines of $200-300. The law applies to all licensed vehicles including those visiting from other provinces.

British Columbia requires winter tyres on designated highways from 1 October to 30 April (some routes through 31 March). Roads include most of the Trans-Canada Highway, mountain passes (Coquihalla, Rogers, Allison), and many rural routes. Signage on affected roads. Fines for non-compliance: $109.

Other Provinces - Recommended but Not Required

Ontario: not legally required but strongly recommended. Insurance discounts available (5-10% for using winter tyres). Some Ontario municipalities have considered local mandates but none implemented at provincial level. The MTO publishes winter driving guidelines.

Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba: not legally required despite harsh winters. Voluntary compliance is high - many drivers switch in October and back in April. Atlantic provinces (NB, NS, PEI, NL): not required but commonly used. Yukon, NWT, Nunavut: not legally required despite extreme conditions.

What Counts as Winter Tyres

Three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol indicates legitimate winter tyres meeting traction performance standards. M+S (Mud and Snow) markings alone don't qualify in Quebec - must have 3PMSF. All-weather tyres with 3PMSF symbol qualify in Quebec and BC.

Studs are legal in most provinces during winter months but may have specific date restrictions. Studded tyres should be removed by April 30 in most provinces (causes road damage in warm conditions). Manitoba allows year-round studs; Quebec and Ontario have date-specific restrictions.

Cost vs Benefit

Set of 4 winter tyres: $400-1,200 depending on size and brand. Mounting/balancing: $80-150. Storage off-season: $50-100/year if you don't have garage space. Total ongoing cost: $400-700/year amortised over 3-5 year tyre life. Insurance discount sometimes covers half of that.

Safety benefits: 25-50% better stopping distance on snow/ice, better acceleration grip, better cornering. Real research shows winter tyres reduce winter accidents by 30-50% compared to all-season in cold climates. Frequently Asked Questions

Are all-season tyres okay for Canadian winter?

All-season tyres lose significant grip below 7Β°C - they harden and become essentially summer-only effective. Quebec and BC laws recognise this. Even in non-mandate provinces, all-seasons in Canadian winter are a real safety compromise vs proper winter tyres.

When should I install winter tyres?

Generally when nighttime temperatures drop consistently below 7Β°C, typically late October to early November. Quebec law makes it legal compliance not driver judgment. BC: by October 1 on designated routes.

Do I need 4 winter tyres or just 2?

Always 4 for safety. Mixed sets (winter front, all-season rear, or vice versa) cause unpredictable handling - the end with worse grip slides during turns or braking. Most insurance discounts require 4 winter tyres.

What about visiting Quebec from another province?

If your visit covers December 1 to March 15, Quebec law applies regardless of where your vehicle is registered. Compliance is enforced; rental companies in Quebec automatically equip vehicles with winter tyres during the mandate period.
