How to Remove an Image Background

Upload an image and click on the background colour you want to remove. The tool uses colour-matching to find and erase all pixels similar to the colour you clicked. Adjust the tolerance slider to control how much colour variation is included. The result is a transparent PNG ready for use in designs, presentations, or product listings.

The colour-click method works by comparing every pixel in the image to the colour you selected. Pixels within the tolerance range are made transparent. A low tolerance (10-20) removes only very similar colours, useful for solid backgrounds. A higher tolerance (40-60) catches gradients and slight colour variations, useful for photos with uneven lighting.

Tolerance and Edge Settings

Tolerance controls how aggressively the tool matches colours. At 0, only the exact colour you clicked is removed. At 100, nearly everything is removed. For most solid-colour backgrounds, a tolerance of 20-30 works well. For photos with shadows or gradients on the background, try 40-50.

Edge-only mode restricts removal to pixels connected to the image border, which prevents the tool from accidentally removing interior areas that happen to match the background colour. For example, if you are removing a white background from a photo of a white mug, edge-only mode removes the white background without touching the white mug.

Tips for Best Results

Start with photos that have a clear contrast between the subject and background. Solid colour backgrounds (white, green, blue) give the cleanest results. If the background has multiple colours, click each one separately and adjust tolerance for each. Zoom in to check edges after removal.

Save your result as PNG to preserve transparency. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas will be filled with white if you export as JPG. For product photography, remove the background and place items on a pure white or custom colour background for a clean, professional look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between colour-click and AI background removal?

Colour-click removal works by matching a specific colour you select and removing all similar pixels. It is fast and works very well for solid or simple backgrounds. AI removal uses machine learning to detect the subject of the photo and remove everything else, which handles complex backgrounds like outdoor scenes or busy rooms. This tool uses the colour-click method.

Why should I save as PNG instead of JPG?

PNG supports transparency, so the removed background stays transparent. JPG does not support transparency and will fill removed areas with white. Always save as PNG if you plan to place the image on a different background or use it in a design tool.

Can I remove a background that is not a single colour?

Yes, but you will need to click multiple times on different areas. Each click removes a different colour range. For complex, multi-colour backgrounds like outdoor photos, an AI-based removal tool may give faster results. This tool works best with solid or near-solid backgrounds.
