What Centrelink Pays

Centrelink (operated by Services Australia) administers the major income support payments: JobSeeker (replacing Newstart, $762/fortnight max single, lower for partnered), Age Pension (up to $1,144/fortnight single, $1,725 couple combined), Parenting Payment, Family Tax Benefit Parts A and B, Youth Allowance, Disability Support Pension, Rent Assistance.

Each payment has its own eligibility rules, residency requirements, and payment rates. Most are means-tested using both income tests and assets tests. The lower of the two test outcomes applies. Rates indexed to CPI twice a year (March and September) so figures change frequently.

Income and Assets Tests

Income test: each $1 of income above the threshold reduces payment by 50 cents (JobSeeker) or 50 cents per $2 above threshold (most pensions). Assets test: payment reduces by $3/fortnight per $1,000 of assets above threshold. Whichever test produces the lower payment applies.

Family home is exempt from the assets test for most payments. Superannuation in accumulation phase is exempt from assets test until pension age - then counted. This creates the 'super loophole' where retirees structure assets to maximise pension eligibility. Investment properties and businesses are counted at market value.

Family Tax Benefit

FTB Part A is paid per child based on family income. Maximum rate $213.36/fortnight per child age 0-12, $277.34/fortnight 13-15+. Phases out from family income over $65,189. FTB Part B is for single-parent or single-earner couple families, max $171.24/fortnight if youngest child under 5, $119.84 if under 18.

End-of-year FTB supplement (about $850 per child Part A, $437 family Part B) is paid if you've correctly declared income and met immunisation requirements. Many families discover they were under-paid through the year because their actual income came in lower than estimated. Always reconcile after tax return.

Mutual Obligation and Reporting

JobSeeker requires 'mutual obligation' activities - typically 5 job applications per fortnight, attending appointments with employment service provider, reporting fortnightly via myGov. Failure can result in payment suspensions or 'demerit point' system penalties.

Income reporting is mandatory every fortnight even with no work. Late reporting delays payment. Working part-time while on JobSeeker: you can earn up to $150/fortnight without reduction; above that, payment reduces. The [Australia Income Tax Calculator](/australia-income-tax-calculator) helps for tax-time reconciliation since Centrelink payments are taxable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Centrelink payments taxable?

Yes for most working-age payments (JobSeeker, Parenting Payment, Youth Allowance). Tax is withheld at source if you opt in. Pensions (Age Pension, DSP) are taxable but most pensioners pay no net tax due to Senior Australians Tax Offset. FTB and Rent Assistance are NOT taxable income.

How long do I wait for first payment?

Standard processing 2-3 weeks for new claims, faster if you're already in the system. Liquid assets test waiting period applies if you have over $5,000 in immediate cash - 1 week per $500 above threshold, max 13 weeks. Income maintenance period applies if you received redundancy or leave payments.

What's the Age Pension age?

Currently 67 for everyone born after 1 January 1957. Was 65 historically, raised gradually over the past decade. Pension age has been politically discussed for further increases but no concrete plan to push beyond 67 currently.

Can I receive Centrelink while studying?

Yes - Youth Allowance (up to age 21 for full-time study), Austudy (over 25), ABSTUDY (Indigenous), or special supports for postgraduate research. Each has its own income tests, parental income test, residency requirements. Eligible students can also access HECS-HELP for fees, Rent Assistance, and various scholarships.
