Brightness adjustment shifts every pixel's luminance value up or down by a uniform amount. Increasing brightness adds light to all pixels equally, which lifts shadows but can wash out highlights if pushed too far. Decreasing brightness removes light, deepening shadows but potentially losing detail in dark areas.

The most common reason is fixing photos that came out too dark or too light. Indoor photos without flash, backlit subjects, and overcast outdoor shots often need a brightness boost of 10-20% to look natural. Overexposed shots from bright sunlight or flash that fired too close need brightness reduced.

Brightness adjustment is also useful for preparing images for print, since printed images typically appear darker than they do on screen. Bumping brightness up by 5-10% before printing compensates for this. For social media, slightly brighter images tend to perform better in feeds because they catch the eye while scrolling.
